With the book closed on the 2016 PBR season, the gate will open on 2017 with Saturday's Real Time Pain Relief Velocity Tour event in Ontario, California. The Velocity Tour, formerly known as the BlueDEF Tour, will continue to provide a way for up-and-coming bull riders to earn their way to the BFTS while providing veterans with a second chance at returning to the PBR's top-flight tour. Saturday's event in Ontario will feature several riders already within the Top 35 as well as young stars like Keyshawn Whitehorse working on getting a head start before the BFTS returns in January.

Surprisingly it was a hit single, Record Year by Eric Church, that helped keep Ryan Dirteater focused and determined over the year. It was a habit that paid off when Dirteater went a perfect 6-for-6 to win the 2016 World Finals event title. He joined J.B. Mauney and Silvano Alves as the only rider to ride every bull they face at the Finals.

Nevada Newman roared onto the BFTS scene when he rode Mississippi Hippy back in February. But the then rookie had trouble sticking on the PBR's top-flight tour. He rebounded, though, and made his first World Finals appearance. With the 2016 BFTS season now in the books, Newman will now head to Australia for a unique opportunity to compete and learn some new things abroad.

Dakota Buttar used the opportunity given to him at his first World Finals to go 2-for-5. Though it may not have set the world aflame, Buttar did turn in a personal best by riding Hy Test for 88.25 points in Round 5. It was an important confidence booster for Buttar who will compete in Edmonton looking to win a historic third consecutive Canadian Professional Rodeo Association title.

SweetPro's Bruiser came through late and made stock contractor H.D. Page proud. For Page it was the culmination of a year of care and love given to Bruiser over the course of the season. Page cares immensely for his bulls, especially Bruiser, and appreciated being rewarded for both their hard work in 2016.

In a span of 14 months, Cooper Davis went from relative unknown to the 2016 World Champion. Over that time Davis went through injuries, doubt and some bad breaks before an injury to Fabiano Vieira in Nashville set Davis on the path to his eventual championship. Through it all, Davis fell back on his determination and the love of his family to help him push through it all and raise the championship trophy in Las Vegas.

Cooper Davis became the 2016 World Champion after winning Round 5 of the World Finals. The Round 5 win propelled him past former world No. 1 Kaique Pacheco. Pacheco was bucked off by Slinger Jr. in the Built Ford Tough Championship Round. SweetPro's Bruiser was named the 2016 World Champion Bull. Bruiser received a 46.25-point bull score in his final out of the season.

Ryan Dirteater won the World Finals event title after going a perfect 6-for-6. Dirteater becomes only the third rider in PBR history to cover every bull they faced at the World Finals. The win was his fourth event win of the season and the biggest of his career.

SweetPro's Bruiser claimed the 2016 World Champion Bull title Sunday at the World Finals. Bruiser beat out Pearl Harbor and defending champion SweetPro's Long John who ended Sunday in a three-way tie. It's was Bruiser's consistency over the season that broke the tie based on the sum of his best eight outs.
